Adopt a Pet

Before you adopt

Think it through

We want to make sure that everyone considering adoption fully understands and is ready to take on the moral, physical, and financial responsibilities of caring for an animal. When these needs cannot be consistently met, both the person and the animal may struggle, and sadly, the animal can be placed at risk of neglect or abandonment.

For this reason, we ask you to think carefully about your current lifestyle and circumstances before choosing to adopt. Dogs and cats require long-term commitment, daily care, and genuine love. They should never be adopted as a temporary solution, for children’s entertainment alone, or kept chained, isolated, or confined without proper care and interaction.

1The animal you are interested in

Please keep in mind that a dog, especially a puppy, is not yet house-trained and needs patience and time to learn. Also consider that when grown, it needs to go outside to relieve itself and exercise about 2–3 times a day.

2Adopter’s personal details
3Your interest in adopting

Without prejudging anyone, please keep in mind that the more information you share in this section, the better your chances of adopting your favourite. Missing information puts ARSA in the position of waiting for other applicants.

4About your home

Is the yard/balcony fenced?*

Cats only. High windows without nets are a big danger for cats, as they can fall while trying to catch insects or birds.

Are you willing to fit protective nets on your windows?
Do you rent your home?*
Does your landlord allow you to keep a pet?*
5Other pets in your family
Do you currently have a pet?*
Have you had a dog or cat before?*
Current pet – species
Current pet – sex
Is your current pet spayed/neutered?

Was your previous pet spayed/neutered?
What happened to it?
6Your new dog/cat
Where will the dog/cat sleep?*
Are you willing to cover all costs of vaccination and spaying/neutering of your dog/cat?*

When adopting a dog/cat, spaying/neutering is mandatory (at around 6–7 months of age). Afterwards, the sterilisation certificate from the clinic, signed and stamped by the vet who performed it, must be emailed to ARSA. Sterilisation is morally and vitally important to prevent overpopulation of street animals and lowers the risk of mammary tumours in cats and female dogs. All dogs/cats adopted from ARSA MUST be spayed/neutered!

Do you agree with this requirement?*
Do all family members agree with the decision to adopt?*
Are you or anyone in your family allergic to dogs/cats?*

Dogs only

What would you do if the adopted dog grew bigger than expected?

7Important for your new dog/cat
After adopting, you MUST KEEP IN REGULAR CONTACT with ARSA and email us news, with photos, about the health and settling-in of the adopted animal. This continues during the first three years after adoption. Do you agree?*
Whatever happens, you MUST NEVER REMOVE the dog/cat adopted from ARSA FROM YOUR HOME by giving it to someone else or abandoning it on the street. If we discover such cases, you will permanently lose the right to adopt and the animal will be taken back by ARSA immediately (Veterinary Law of 29.09.2011, against animal cruelty). Do you agree?*
If, for a declared reason ARSA can verify, you can no longer keep the adopted dog/cat, you MUST CONTACT US IMMEDIATELY. Even if you have found a possible adopter, that person must first speak with us so we can find the right solution together. Do you agree?*
In case of mistreatment, neglect or abandonment of the adopted dog/cat, YOU PERMANENTLY LOSE THE RIGHT TO ADOPT. Do you agree?*
If you do not spay/neuter the animal or do not stay in regular contact after adoption, YOU PERMANENTLY LOSE THE RIGHT TO ADOPT. Do you agree?*
